Gianni Moscon ha vuelto a demostrar que pocos ciclistas han alcanzado el final de temporada con un estado de forma similar al suyo. Sin competir de final de julio a mitad de septiembre tras su expulsión del Tour de Francia, el italiano se ha impuesto desde entonces en la Coppa Agostoni, el Giro della Toscana y el nacional contrarreloj, amén de ser quinto en el Mundial de ruta. En la etapa reina del Tour de Guangxi, el corredor del Sky ha sido el mejor en la ascensión final a Mashan Nongla -3,2 km al 7,3 %-.
La etapa reina, en una ronda caracterizada por las etapas llanas, constaba de 157 kilómetros y un puerto de tercera, además de la llegada en alto. Küng (BMC), Eenkhoorn (LottoNL-Jumbo) y Kluge (Mitchelton-Scott) buscaron la fuga del día, si bien el alemán se descolgó para reintegrarse en el grupo. Küng y Eenkhoorn se marcharon a más de tres minutos y Trek, Education First y Quick-Step dijeron basta; la renta de los fugados se mantuvo en unos márgenes accesibles para el gran grupo.
Próximos al pie del último puerto, Küng intentó la aventura en solitario, pero fue cazado a tres kilómetros y el pelotón llegó compacto a los últimos dos. Unas 40 unidades tomaron la delantera y, ya en los últimos mil metros, Moscon dejó atrás a Felix Grossschartner (Bora) y Sergei Chernetskiy (Astana), segundo y tercero en cruzar la línea de meta, por delante de Carlos Verona (Mitchelton-Scott).
Carlos Verona: «La ascensión final fue muy explosiva, tenía solo tres kilómetros de largo y la aproximación se pareció más a un final de sprint que a uno cuesta arriba. Perdí a mis compañeros de equipo y comencé bastante atrás, pero tenía luz verde y me dije que tenía que aprovechar esta última oportunidad para hacer algo por mí mismo usando los colores de Mitchelton-Scott. Remonté tan fuerte como pude sin mirar atrás, para finalmente terminar cuarto. Ahora que sé que tengo las piernas y también la motivación, trataremos de luchar por el podio final«.
