Alexey Lutsenko (Astana) se ha impuesto en la Montaña Verde, símbolo del Tour de Omán y final de la etapa reina. El kazajo, que ya ganó en Al Bustan y Qurayyat en días anteriores, repetirá la victoria final que ya consiguió el pasado año, salvo incidente improbable en la última jornada, el jueves 21 de febrero y de recorrido prácticamente llano.
Lutsenko ha sido el más fuerte en las duras rampas de la subida, de 5,7km al 10,5% de pendiente media y con picos que superan al 15%. Fabien Grellier (Direct Energie), último superviviente de una larga fuga y alcanzado a 50 metros de la meta, ha sido segundo. Domenico Pozzovivo (Bahrain Merida) ha terminado tercero, mientras que Jesús Herrada (Cofidis) ha sido sexto y el primer español.
Pozzovivo y Herrada acompañarán también a Lutsenko en el podio final del Tour de Omán, un gran resultado para el conquense, que en 2018 ya fue cuarto en la general y en esta ocasión sube un peldaño. Rui Costa (UAE Team Emirates) y Élie Gesbert (Team Arkéa Samsic) han terminado en la cuarta y quinta plaza, respectivamente, las mismas que ocuparán en la clasificación final salvo cambios inesperados.
La quinta etapa se ha resuelto, como era de esperar, en la Montaña Verde, jueza de la carrera omaní desde su introducción en el trazado hace nueve años. Julien Duval (Ag2r La Mondiale), Romain Cardis y Fabien Grellier (Direct Energie), Stijn Steels (Roompot-Charles), Julien Mortier (Wallonie-Bruxelles) y Kenneth Van Rooy (Sport Vlaanderen-Baloise) han sido los protagonistas de una fuga especialmente resistente.
Los escapados han llegado a disponer de seis minutos de ventaja sobre el pelotón, máxima renta, y se han presentado al pie de la subida final con algo menos de cuatro minutos. Astana ha endurecido el ritmo para su líder, el enrachado Lutsenko, que ha frustrado la apuesta de Direct Energie por Grellier, cazado cuando avistaba la línea de meta.
El nuevo éxito de Lutsenko en Omán, tercero en esta edición, es el noveno triunfo de la temporada para Astana en diez días tras los conquistados por Ion Izagirre en la Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, Pello Bilbao y Luis León Sánchez, en la Vuelta a Murcia, Miguel Ángel López, en el Tour de Colombia, y Gorka Izagirre, en el Tour de La Provenza.
La próxima etapa
La sexta y última etapa del Tour de Omán, de 135,5 kilómetros entre Al Mouj Muscat y Matrah Corniche, está diseñada para los hombres más rápidos del pelotón.
