Omar Fraile ha logrado su segunda victoria de la campaña -tras la etapa del País Vasco– al sorprender en el sprint final al italiano del Bahrain, Sonny Colbrelli en la primera etapa en línea del Tour de Romandía, ronda suiza World Tour, entre Friburgo y Delémont. Una más española del Astana tras las de la semana pasada de Pello Bilbao y Luis León Sánchez en el Tour Alpes.
Una jornada para que el vencedor de la pasada Itzulia, Primoz Roglic, pase a liderar la prueba tras no resistir el exigente final el australiano Michael Matthews.
Alexis Gougeard (AG2R), Remy Mertz (Lotto), Antoine Duchesne (Groupama), Marco Minnard (Wanty) y William Clarke (EF) fueron los elegidos de la escapada del día controlada en todo momento por el Sunweb alemán y que llegó a tener una renta máxima de 5 minutos.
Una armonía que se rompió en la última vuelta al circuito donde Minnard y Gougeard dejaron a sus otros tres acompañantes. Lotto con De Gendt contragolpeó, se elevó el ritmo y por sorpresa Matthews dijo basta. Gougeard fue el último de los fugados en caer a menos de dos kilómetros del final. Su compatriota Gaudu lo porfió en el kilómetro final y cuando parecía que Colbrelli iba a apuntarse un fácil éxito emergió la imponente figura del vizcaíno para lograr su quinta victoria como profesional, tercera en la primera división y 25ª del ciclismo español en 2018.
José Joaquín Rojas no tomó la salida por causas que no han sido comunicadas oficialmente por el Movistar.
DECLARACIONES
Omar Fraile: «Estoy muy feliz con esta victoria. Después de los clásicas, no me sentía muy bien, pero hoy todo salió bien y pude hacer una buena etapa. En general, nuestro equipo estuvo súper hoy, hicimos una carrera muy fuerte. Después de todas las subidas todavía teníamos muchos corredores en el grupo de cabeza y mis compañeros de equipo hicieron un gran trabajo para mí. En la parte final de la etapa me di cuenta de que nuestro grupo podía llegar a la meta al sprint, por lo que Dario Cataldo y Jakob Fuglsang trabajaron duro para perseguir todos los ataques y llevarme al frente. Sabía que Sonny Colbrelli era mi mayor rival hoy, ya que es muy rápido. Entonces, seguí su estela y comencé mi carrera con unos 300 metros por delante. Fue una buena decisión, ya que en los últimos 100 metros había una pequeña subida. De todos modos, esta victoria me trae, y creo que para todo el equipo, una buena motivación antes de las próximas etapas. Como se ha visto, Jakob está en buena forma y trataremos de ayudarle para alcanzar un alto resultado aquí».
