Rohan Dennis ha reservado su primera victoria con el arcobaleno hasta Suiza. El australiano del Bahrein Merida fue el mejor en el prólogo del Tour de Suiza, el campeón del mundo superó a Langnau im Emmental al polaco Maciej Bodnar (Bora Hansgrohe) por centésimas y al australiano Michael Matthews (Sunweb) por un segundo y se convirtió en el primer líder.
El Tour de Suiza comenzó este sábado con una crono individual de nueve kilómetros y medio con principio y fin en Langnau im Emmental y sus alrededores, jornada propicia para especialistas. El corredor de la selección suiza Fabian Lienhard fue el primero en lanzarse por la rampa de salida para dar inicio a la ronda helvética en su 83ª edición. El campeón nacional neozelandés Patrick Bevin (CCC) marcaría las primeras referencias entre los favoritos por la disputa de la victoria con un tiempo de 10 minutos y 58 segundos. Pero no mucho tiempo después sería batido. El propio Bodnar recortó en ocho segundos el tiempo al que la alegría le duraría poco, el favorito Rohan Dennis empezó su contrarreloj justo un poco después de él.
El campeón mundial batió por una fracción de segundo al polaco y tomó su asiento en la “silla caliente” con casi dos horas aún de espera por delante.Michael Matthews, Soren Kragh Andersen y Kasper Asgreen se acercaban al tiempo del aussie pero sin inquietarle, pero se quedaron cortos. Los favoritos por la general no anduvieron lejos, la pareja del Ineos Egan Bernal (+23 segundos) y Geraint Thomas (+17 segundos) limitaron daños. Rui Costa (+37 segundos), Marc Soler (+29 segundos), Simon Spilak (+38 segundos), Enric Mas (+43 segundos), Wilco Kelderman (+1 minuto y 28 segundos) perdieron mucho más que Thomas y Bernal.
En la última media hora, en parte debido a la lluvia, nadie se acercó a Rohan Dennis, como resultado de lo cual el australiano logró su primera victoria de la temporada, la 31ª de su carrera y la quinta para el conjunto bareiní durante 2019.
