Trabajada victoria para el murciano Luis León Sánchez en la segunda etapa del Tour de Suiza después de completar una cabalgada en solitario que le ha permitido imponerse con absoluta superioridad a un pelotón perseguidor en el que viajaban los favoritos por la misma, en la previa de la jornada, Peter Sagan, Michael Matthews, Greg Van Avermaert o Matteo Trentin.
Tercera victoria del año para el murciano del Astana, tras las conseguidas en la ronda de casa en el mes de febrero, 43ª de su carrera profesional y que supone la 28ª para el equipo kazajo minutos después de que Jakob Fuglsang se coronara en el Critérium de Dauphiné por segunda vez redondeando una jornada dominical sobresaliente para los de Alexander Vinokourov. Cambio en el liderato que cede Rohan Dennis (Bahrein Merida) y pasa a manos del danés Kasper Asgreen (Deceuninck Quick Step).
Los corredores recorrieron tres vueltas a un circuito en Langnau de más de cincuenta kilómetros cada una, con dos subidas en cada una de ellas por el Schallenberg (8.2 km a 4.9% de desnivel medio) y Chuderhüsi (2.8 km a 9.8%) que componían los 156,9 kms del recorrido total. Durante la segunda vuelta al mismo, los tres fugados Guillaume Van Keirsbulck (CCC), Fabien Grellier (Total Direct Energie) y Gavin Mannion (Rally-UHC) serían neutralizados mientras que el cuarto de la escapada del día, Claudio Imhof (selección Suiza), tomó una diferencia máxima de más de cuatro minutos con el pelotón, encabezado por el equipo del líder Rohan Dennis, el Bahrein Merida.
Imhof se mantuvo en el liderato de la etapa hasta el paso final por Schallenberg durante la última vuelta, Astana subió el ritmo detrás por lo que el joven suizo fue absorbido inmediatamente y comenzaría el show del equipo celeste por privar del previsible sprint a los especialistas.
El trabajo de Astana fue continuado por un ataque en solitario de Omar Fraile a 31 kilómetros del final. Dennis, y los suyos, tuvieron que hacer el trabajo de persecución, y funcionó. A pesar de las amagos posteriores de Mathias Frank y Kasper Asgreen, entre otros, en la escalada definitiva a Chuderhüsi, un selecto grupo llegó coronando a la cima dejando atrás a ilustres de la velocidad como Sagan, Trentin, GvA o Matthews. Los cuales reingresarían a la cabeza en el descenso posterior.
Pero Luis Léon Sánchez intentó, a diez kilómetros de la meta, reescribir el guión en solitario aprovechando el descontrolado grupo. El español tomó una ventaja de 35 segundos antes de que el pelotón estableciera una persecución sería por lo que Sánchez, aprovechando sus virtudes de rodador experimentado, impulsaría su baza hasta el final sin perder un margen de 20”-30” imposibles de acortar por el pelotón. El murciano señalaba nuevamente el cielo en señal de homenaje a su hermano mayor fallecido, León, y con ésta son ya 43 ocasiones con la que invoca su recuerdo.
