Día completo para Peter Sagan que empieza a amortizar los glóblos rojos naturales incubados en Sierra Nevada, su lugar habitual de concentraciones en altitud. El campeón eslovaco recupera la chispa de un año gris en cuanto a triunfos -«solo» etapas en Down Under y California- para recuperarla con su nada menos que 17ª etapa en la ronda helvética y 115ª de su trufado palmarés global.
Además lo hizo con la suficiencia que le ha caracterizado tantas ocasiones soltando su rueda de Elia Viviani, John Degenkolb y el asturiano Iván García Cortina sobre la meta final adoquinada y ligeramente empinada. Una alegría que le sirve para vestirse de amarillo líder merced a las bonificaciones desbancando a Kasper Asgreen. Jonathan Castroviejo y Luis León Sánchez se mantienen entre los diez mejores.
Bert-Jan Lindeman (Jumbo), el exRías Baixas Willie Smit (Katusha), Ryan Anderson (Rally) y después el local Simon Pellaud decidieron embarcarse en la aventura del día sin demasiados visos de éxito por la oportunidad final que se le brindaba a los velocistas. De ahí que especialmente el Bora alemán no dejó que la diferencia adquiriera demaisada diferencia. Así fue porque a pesar del intento final de Pellaud el grupo se reunió a falta de 6 kilómetros para la llegada. Deceuninck dejó a Viviani perfectamente colocado, pero las piernas de Sagan obtuvieron una potencia no vista hasta ahora en 2019 para dejar helados a todos sus perseguidores y, encima, con la doble recompensa de la primera plaza de la general.

Peter Sagan: «Estoy feliz con esta victoria de etapa, mi decimoséptima en el Tour de Suiza y por el maillot amarillo de líder. Me gustaría agradecer a todo el equipo por su brillante trabajo, controlaron la carrera y me colocaron en un lugar perfecto para la victoria. Fue un final muy rápido y bastante agitado porque todos querían estar delante. Cuando cruzamos la línea de meta por primera vez, estaba claro que para tener una oportunidad de ganar, tenía que estar en las primeras posiciones del grupo antes del último giro a la izquierda. Eso es lo que hicimos y pude atacar en el tramo final para obtener la victoria».
