El defensor Alejandro Valverde (37 años) pudo con el aspirante Egan Bernal (21) para repetir la victoria del año pasado en La Molina, recuperar el liderato del desconectado Thomas de Gendt, firmando su segunda victoria en esta edición, séptima de 2018 y 115ª en su carrera profesional. Otro día completo para el jefe del Movistar, que se encamina hacia su tercera vuelta del año tras Comunitat Valenciana y Abu Dhabi.
El TOP Ciclo 21 de las tres últimas campañas y dominador de 2018 ya comenzó atento sumando 3 segundos de bonificación como queriendo resarcirse de su pérdida del liderato la víspera ante el magistral De Gendt en Camprodón. Una vez logrado el objetivo inicial, Movistar soltó las riendas lo que aprovechó el colombiano Esteban Chaves para atacar seguido por Rosskopf (BMC), Skujins (Trek) y Rossetto (Cofidis) que no aguantaron al del Mitchelton en el Coll de Jou (1a. Cat.). Suyo fue también el Alto de Creueta donde el belga De Gendt decidió ya dejar de defender la casaca de la SCUE Sants. Ya cumplió de sobra.
Chaves vio cómo le remachó Mohoric (Bahrain) en el descenso al que hizo lo propio el mismo Valverde. Sky no lo toleró y cazaron al dúo a falta de 19 km. En la subida final se quedaron ya en cabeza Latour, Soler, Quintana, Bernal y Valverde. El reciente vencedor de la París-Niza aprovechó su forma para atacar a Latour y Egan Bernal, marcados por Valverde y Quintana, aún lejos de su mejor forma, que cedió su rango al murciano. El grupo de Unzue supo sí esta vez jugar bien sus bazas para descolgar primero al francés y para lanzar después a Valverde que no tuvo problmas para superar en la meta a un resistente e inexperto Bernal, verdugo, no obstante, de Quintana en la Colombia Oro y Paz.

«Ha sido un día realmente duro, sobre todo por el frío. En bajadas como la de la Creueta se pasaba bastante mal. El movimiento de Mitchelton en la subida a Jou ha sido muy bueno, pero no nos causaba nervios por dos simples razones: que la etapa era durísima y que un corredor solo tiene muy difícil llegar hasta el final, como le ha sucedido a Chaves. El equipo ha hecho una labor fenomenal en todo momento, llevando la carrera siempre controlada y con mucha calma. En la bajada de la Creueta he salido a por ese ataque de Mohoric pero ha arriesgado fuerte en un par de curvas y yo no quería jugármela tanto. He prefiero comer bien, hacer una bajada tranquila y esperar a mis compañeros. Estoy encantado con cómo nos hemos sabido mover en esa última subida. Con la ayuda del coche y organizándonos bien entre nosotros ha salido todo a la perfección. De todas formas, el planteamiento estaba muy a la vista: si saltaba Soler o Nairo, había que esperar y dejar que fuesen otros a por ellos. Éramos tres y jugábamos con esa ventaja. Yo solo tenía que dedicarme a estar ahí y buscar luego la victoria de etapa. Nairo, Marc y todos los compañeros han estado de diez, no me canso de decirlo. Ahora Bernal pasa a ser el rival más importante para la general. Es un magnífico corredor de presente y de futuro al que habrá que vigilar de aquí al domingo. Confío en mis compañeros y pelearemos por mantener este maillot hasta el final».
