Maximilian Schachmann, del Quick-Step, se ha adjudicado la 6ª etapa de la Volta a Catalunya al batir a Diego Rubio (Burgos-BH) en el mano a mano tras marchar ambos en fuga durante más de 100 kilómetros. Alejandro Valverde llega a la última etapa como líder y máximo favorito al triunfo absoluto.
La etapa, que en un principio partía desde Vielha, tuvo que ser recortada por la nevada caída en el Val d’Aran. De 194 kilómetros se pasaron a 117, con salida desde La Pobla de Segur, y de tres puertos de segunda categoría se mutó a uno solo.
Partieron en el kilómetro 17, bajo la pertinaz lluvia, el abulense Diego Rubio y el alemán Schachmann. La diferencia máxima rondó los tres minutos y medio, ya que la labor de Mitchelton-Scott en la subida al Coll d’Ager evitó que se disparase, al tiempo que cortó el grupo. Rubio y Schachmann, dos buenos rodadores, tenían terreno para progresar, pero a priori estaban en clara desventaja.
En el pelotón empezaron a repartirse el trabajo para capturar a los fugados: Murias, Cofidis, Bahrein, Bora... Había voluntad de llegada al sprint entre la cuarentena de corredores que resistía entre infernal ritmo de persecución y el viento de costado, que empezó a causar estragos. Además, el alemán parecía no poder aportar más que aguantar la rueda del español, con lo que la diferencia descendió progresivamente.
Era sólo de un minuto a 15 kilómetros de meta. Rubio era siempre el más generoso. Tanto la ventaja como la distancia a meta se reducían proporcionalmente. Todo apuntaba a que ambos nadaban para ahogarse en la orilla. El alemán pareció renacer conforme se acercaba la llegada. Y los dos llegaron a la recta de meta, donde Schachmann sumó la decimonovena para Quick-Step y dejó a Rubio, al Burgos-BH y a los que ya saboreaban la primera victoria de la escuadra burgalesa con la miel en los labios.

El italiano perdió más de 13 minutos en la etapa con final en Vielha por un dolor en la pierna. Las pruebas a las que ha sido sometido en Barcelona han diagnosticado un edema de la femoral derecha postraumático, pero sin lesiones graves.
