Nada hacía presagiar que Jan Tratnik iba a ser capaz, al meterse en la fuga buena del día, de llevar a buen puerto una aventura que, al menos de entrada, parecía imposible, pero el ciclismo tiene esas cosas por las que, a veces, la valentía y ese puntito de inconsciencia acaban dando el premio grande.
Nada más pasar bajo la pancarta del kilómetro cero fueron muchos los hombres que trataron de sorprender a un pelotón que, sin embargo, parecía querer mantener las cosas bajo control en esa fase inicial de la clásica neerlandesa. Muchos, decíamos, intentaban abrir hueco, pero cada intentona era inmediatamente neutralizada por un grupo al que casi consiguen sorpnrender Yoann Bagot (Vital Concept) y Nahome Desale (Beat) cuando, tras algo más de media hora de pedaleo, se vieron con cerca de medio minuto de renta.
Pese a que dos hombres poco peligro podían representar para el grupo en el quebdradísimo trazado de Limburgo, el pelotón no tardó en reaccionar y echar abajo la escapada, algo que no pudo –o no quiso– volver a hacer cuando Edward Dunbar (Aqua Blue), Ben Perry (Israel Cycling Academy), Thomas Degand (Wanty-Groupe Gobert), Jens Van den Dool (Delta), Marco Tizza (Nippo-Vini Fantini) y Oscar Riesebeek (Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij) se marcharon para, ahora ya sí, emerger como la escapada buena del día.
Una fuga que, aunque cogió cuerpo, apenas consiguió rozar los tres minutos como ventaja máxima. Tan cerca estuvieron siempre del gran grupo que cuando, con todavía 45 kilómetros por delante, Adriaan Janssen (Delta) y Jan Tratnik (CCC) consiguieron cerrar el hueco y sumar dos hombres más a la escapada tras, eso sí, más de 30 kilómetros de intenso pedaleo y esfuerzo.
Se fueron sucediendo las siempre pestosas subidas de esta región fronteriza entre Países Bajos, Bélgica y Alemania y el pelotón parecía incapaz de cerrar el hueco respecto a un grupo de escapados que iba perdiendo unidades a causa más del esfuerzo que del trabajo de neutralización del grupo. Así, llegamos a los últimos 10 kilómetros con Dunbar, Degand, Janssens y Tizza con poco más de un minuto de renta. Un cuarteto al que poco después se le volvería a unir un Tratnik que, tras un pequeño paseo por el prado en una curva, no tardó en volver a enlazar con la cabeza de carrera.
Y así, lo que suele parecer imposible, se hizo realidad: el pelotón no pudo dar caza a los escapados y fue Jan Tratnik el que, en un precioso sprint final, se llevó un merecido triunfo por delante de Tizza y Janssens.
